New concert season brings new works of Estonian composers

The already opened concert season in Estonia promises to be intriguing. The opening concert of State Concert Institute Eesti Kontsert and Estonian National Symphony Orchestra presented the Estonian premiere of Eino Tamberg’s “Festive Music”, Op. 117, commissioned by Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2003. ENSO was conducted by its chief conductor Nikolai Alexeev.

International New Music Festival NYYD (13.–23.10.2005, Tallinn) will present numerous premieres of the music by Estonian younger composers’ generation: Vootele Aer, Galina Grigorjeva, Age Hirv, Pille Kangur, Tõnis Kaumann, Margo Kõlar, Tõnu Kõrvits, Märt-Matis Lill, Hans-Gunter Lock, Malle Maltis, Jüri Reinvere, Timo Steiner, Kaido Suss, Mirjam Tally, Toivo Tulev, Helena Tulve and Mari Vihmand.
Besides the distinguished performers from abroad, the festival programme includes the performances of Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Olari Elts, Nargen Opera, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and conductor Paul Hillier, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Tõnu Kaljuste, NYYD Ensemble, Cyberstudio, Electronic Music Studio of the Estonian Academy of Music, Ensemble U: and Reval Ensemble.

State Concert Institute Eesti Kontsert will celebrate the jubilees of several Estonian composers – Arvo Pärt (70), Eino Tamberg (75) and Peeter Vähi (50) – among them.
The concerts will be held in the honour of conductors Olev Oja (70) and Ants Soots (50), bass-baritone Mati Palm (40 years on the stage) and organist Andres Uibo (50th birthday and the celebration of 30 years as a concerting organist).

The peak of Estonian professional music, the annual festival Estonian Music Days organised by Estonian Composers’ Union will present the selection of works by different generations of Estonian composers. The central composer in spring 2005 will be Helena Tulve (Arvo Pärt in 2005, Toivo Tulev in 2004).
