State Concert Institute Eesti Kontsert opened a new concert hall in Jõhvi

On the October 8th 2005, Jõhvi Concert Hall – the biggest and most modernised concert hall in Estonia opened its doors.

The local audience of Eastern-Estonia, the minister of Culture Mr Raivo Palmaru and a great number of members of Estonian cultural society attended the opening ceremony.

The programme of the opening night presented inviews into the world of ballet and musical, and Estonian classical music: “Homeland Tune” by Heino Eller, “As you know” by Rudolf Tobias and “Credo” by Arvo Pärt performed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Vanemuine Theatre, Girls’ Choir “Ellerhein”, Estonian National Male Choir and Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste.

The 10.300 m2 surface area of Jõhvi Concert Hall (building of which was financed both by the resources state and private funds) presents a grand hall (with 900 seats) and a chamber hall (with 160 seats). The acoustics and technical equipment of the concert hall enable to perform music in different genres starting from symphonic music to rock concerts and opera performances. There are stationary technical possibilities for broadcasting activities.

Jõhvi Concert Hall is also a host for Jõhvi Music School, the after-school activity centre for schoolchildren, music shop, retraining centre, movie theatre and art gallery. In October, two events of International New Music Festival NYYD 2005 take place in Jõhvi Concert Hall – the concerts of the Swedish guitar duo Gothenburg Combo (16th October) and German vocal group Singer Pur (23th October).
