Works of Erkki-Sven Tüür, one of the most performed Estonian composer in the world, works have been commissioned by acknowledged music collectives and performers around the world, mostly his works receive their world premiere performances abroad. The main body of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s oeuvre is formed by instrumental music. He is the author of eight symphonies, nine instrumental concertos, a lot of chamber music and an opera.

Alongside Fireflower the concerts will also feature the U.S premiere of Tüür’s Piano Concerto (soloist Awadagin Pratt) composed in 2006. It was first performed in Germany under the guidance of Paavo Järvi.

The close collaboration between Järvi and Tüür has brought along also world premieres of Symphony No. 7 Pietas (2009) and orchestral work Exodus (1999). Additionally, Järvi has conducted several Tüür’s works in his concert programs and has recorded CD-s of his music.

Erkki-Sven Tüür: „With Fireflower I would like to honor my close friend Paavo after these ten wonderful years with the CSO, which, during his tenure, has also been my “home orchestra” in a very special way.

The idea behind the title is that on momentous occasions such as this, one often receives a bouquet of flowers. This fanfare is my bouquet to Paavo, with the image of blossoms resembling flames. In this short piece one can trace common features with my other orchestral works of the last decade, especially Symphonies No. 4 through 8. With the last perfect interval at the end of this short piece, I express my hope for future collaborations between Paavo and the CSO, who have demonstrated a wonderful and perfect chemistry these last ten years.

Cheers to all music lovers in Cincinnati and yes, bravo, Paavo!“
