Viljandi Guitar Festival will be held this week



The 12th Viljandi Guitar Festival, taking place from October 8 to 13 in the city of Viljandi, has the focus of promoting improvisational and cross-stylistic guitar playing skills. The international festival introduces the best domestic and foreign artists in different venues such as the Estonian Traditional Music Centre, Viljandi Puppet Theatre, the Kondas Centre of Naive Art, as well as Holstre manor’s barn and Õisu manor. The festival also incorporates workshops as well as the day of Estonian guitar builders who will consult in technical matters and present their newest instruments. Each of the festival days will end with the jam session at the wine bar Mulks.

This year’s festival features 16 concerts with 49 musicians from 10 different countries, including Jonathan Kreisberg & Nelson Veras (USA), Joscho Stephan Quartet (Germany), Manish Pingle & Brian Melvin (India/USA), Martin Taylor & Ulf Wakenius (GB/Sweden), Sàndon Szabó & Robert Jürjendal (Hungary/Estonia), Teemu Viinikainen (Finland), Jaak Sooäär Quartet (Estonia) among others. The festival’s special project features Yamandu Costa from Brazil together with Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and conductor Risto Joost

The Viljandi Guitar festival together with the Estonian Jazz Union also presents the annual Tiit Paulus Young Guitar Player’s Prize.

The artistic director of the festival is Ain Agan.
