Aleksei Stepanov

Orchestra conductor, composer and musical figure Aleksei Stepanov was born in Gatchina in 1913 and moved to Narva with his family in 1919. He studied composition at the Tallinn Conservatory in the class of Artur Kapp and Heino Eller (1937–1941).

During World War II, he led the orchestra of the Estonian Rifle Corps. He was director and editor of sheet music publishing of the Estonian Music Foundation (1946–1973), director of the State Philharmonic of the Estonian SSR (1946–1948) and conductor of its brass band (1949–1951). He conducted the wind orchestras at the General Song Celebration in 1950 and 1969, and has conducted the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Variety Orchestra as a guest conductor.

He has mainly written small-scale pieces: instrumental chamber music, solo-, choral- and children's songs and music for brass band. His music is characterized by a sincere and cheerful expression.

Aleksei Stepanov was awarded the honorary title of Estonian SSR Merited Art Worker in 1963.
