Evald Brauer

Flutist and composer Evald Brauer graduated from Tallinn Conservatoire in 1931 in flute performance under Anton Schutinski and composition in 1933 in the class of Artur Kapp.

Brauer worked as a flute teacher in Tallinn Conservatoire (1935–1944), played flute in Estonian Academic Society of Musicians Wind Quintet (1932–1934) and Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra (1944–1961), being also active as a conductor.

His ouevre, diverse in genres, includes orchestral music, chamber works, solo and choir songs, as well as incidental music for theatre and film. „Estonian Capriccio“ won the 1st prize at the competition of orchestral works organised by State Broadcasting in 1936.

Evald Brauer’s works have been performed by Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra (conductors Paul Karp, Kirill Raudsepp, Sergey Prokhorov, Roman Matsov, Paul Mägi and others), Estonian Television and Radio Variety Orchestra (conductor Rostislav Merkulov), Jossif Šagal Quintet, organist Hugo Lepnurm, pianist Vaike Vahi, violinist Ines Rannap, flutist Samuel Saulus and others. He has published a flute schoolbook (1939).
