From July 1 to 7, the Estonian Sinfonietta will once again take part in Jack Mattson's musical performance Katrina in Mariehamn. The production, which was performed for four full houses last summer, will now be performed for three more evenings in July at Alandica Concert Hall.
The Estonian Chamber Music Society’s collaboration with the Åland Cultural Association Katrina began in 2021, when the Estonian Sinfonietta was invited to participate in the opera Lisbeta, based on historical events, commissioned from Icelandic composer Karólína Eiríksdóttir for Åland's 100th Independence Day. The interweaving of Estonian and Ålandic cultural history began more than 100 years ago, when Konrad Mägi, Nikolai Triik, Aleksander Tassa, Anton Starkopf and Friedebert Tuglas made fruitful creative visits to the Åland Islands. At the same time, in the small village of Vargata in Vårdö, was born the future Åland's best-known writer, three-time Nobel Prize nominee Sally Salminen. Her first novel Katrina won a novel competition organised by Holger Schildts Förlag in 1936. Novel was published immediately afterwards and quickly translated into many languages. Katrina was first published in Estonian in 1939 as part of the Nordic Novel series.
This summer production celebrates the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Åland Cultural Association Katrina, named after the novel.
The performances Katrina will take place on July 4th, 5th and 6th at the Alandica Concert Hall in Mariehamn.
