Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir at the Oslo International Church Music Festival

On March 15 at 7.30 pm, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of Daniel Reuss will give a concert of a cappella choral music in Oslo Cathedral. The program consists of Arvo Pärt’s Kanon Pokajanen and Johannes Brahms’s motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben. Pärt’s 70-minute work was written on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral on the text of Great Canon of the Russian Orthodox Church written by St. Andrew of Crete. Work is dedicated to Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and its founder – Tõnu Kaljuste.

Oslo International Church Music Festival, taking place from March 9 to 18, is one of the Norway’s leading church music festivals. The program states that it is a great pleasure and a very special event that the world-famous choir under the direction of legendary conductor Daniel Reuss is a guest at this year's festival.

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is one of the most renowned chamber choirs in the world. It was founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste, who was the principal conductor and artistic director of the choir for almost 20 years. In 2001–2007, the position was held by Paul Hillier and since 2008 Daniel Reuss has been the chief conductor and artistic director. The repertoire of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir ranges from the Gregorian chant to Baroque and 20th century music. The music of Veljo Tormis and Arvo Pärt plays a special role in the choir’s activities, as their compositions have been used to compile whole concert programmes and recording for ECM Records, Virgin Classics, Carus Verlag and Harmonia Mundi.
