Estonian National Male Choir celebrates its 75th anniversary

From November 16 to 31, the Estonian National Male Choir, founded in 1944 by the composer and leader of the Estonian choral movement Gustav Ernesaks will perform concerts titled „Sügav rahu“ in Tallinn, Tartu, and Pärnu to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Under the direction of its present chief conductor Mikk Üleoja, the choir will perform „Responsorium et Hymnus“ by Felix Mendelssohn, „Cantate Domino“ by Ko Matsushita, „Salve Regina“ by Riho-Esko Maimets, „Ten Songs for Male Choir“, Op. 83 by Max Reger (excerpts), „Chanson à boire“ by Francis Poulenc, „Now I’m Nowhere“ by Justė Janulytė (world premiere), and „Sügav rahu“ by Giovanni Bonato.

Janulytė’s piece is a commission from Estonian National Male Choir, written for its 75th anniversary.

The Estonian National Male Choir is a world-renowned professional choir which has performed more than 6,000 concerts in Estonia, in major cities of the former Soviet Union and countries across Western Europe as well as in Israel, Canada and the United States. The choir has regularly recorded with Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Finlandia, Alba Records, Virgin Classics and GB Records. In 2004, the Estonian National Male Choir won a prestigious Grammy award for Cantatas by Jean Sibelius (Virgin Classics) performed together with the Ellerhein Girls’ Choir, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Paavo Järvi. The chief conductor and artistic director of the choir since 2011 has been Mikk Üleoja.
