Celebration of the Estonian Republic - 90: Trio Leibur-Terasmaa-Mätlik performed in Glasgow

On February 29 the anniversary of the Estonian Republic was celebrated by the concert of Estonian VGV Trio (Arvo Leibur - violin, Terje Terasmaa - vibes, Heiki Mätlik - guitar) in Glasgow University’s Chapel. The program consisted of Bach’s Trio Sonata No.1, Astor Piazzolla’s „Tango Suite“ and Raimo Kangro’s (1949 - 2001) last work, called „Spring Imaginations“. The concert was attended by Estonian Ambassador in U.K. Dr. Margus Laidre and the Minister of Culture of Estonia Mrs. Laine Jänes, as well as by the professors of Glasgow University and Academy of Music a.o.

This unique ensemble Leibur - Terasmaa - Mätlik was founded in 1995. At this time no music existed for such an instrumental trio. Today VGV Trio´s repertoire includes many pieces written specially for them by Estonian composers like René Eespere, Toivo Tulev, Peeter Vähi, Galina Grigoryeva, Tõnu Naissoo. Also the special arrangements were made for them by Ester Mägi and Erkki-Sven Tüür.

The Trio has performed in England, the Netherlands, France, Norway, Denmark, and Germany (at ’scene-festival’ „Estland, Lettland, Litauen in NRW“ in 2006). The recent concerts of VGV Trio took place in Tallinn Town Hall, at Alo Mattiisen Music Days on March 4 and at Viljandi Grand Hotel with the Women’s Day program on March 7. Trio’s CD „The King of Tango – Astor Piazzolla“ won the Estonian Annual Music Award in 2000.
