Ensemble for New Music Tallinn performance in Ostrava Days Festival

27.08.2021 - 27.08.2021
Location: Jiří Myron Theatre, Ostrava, Czech Republic
Time: 18:00

Ensemble for New Music Tallinn (ENMT) is having a concert in Ostrava Days Festival with a very interesting and unique program. Several composers wrote new pieces for ENMT and a special sixth-tone harmonium which will be premiered in Ostrava Days Festival. This special sixth-tone harmonium belonged to the legendary Czech composer Alois Hàba, one of the forefathers of microtonal and alternative intonations music, has an array of pieces with various intonation systems. Some of the most extraordinary and, at time, highly unusual ones are those he composed with sixth-tone intonation divisions.
This 1936 harmonium was the engine behind many of Hàba's staggering 6th-tone division pieces. Interestingly however, he only used this magnificent instrument in one composition, his opus 37 six pieces for harmonium.

Today the instrument is an artifact in the National Museum of Prague. Ensemble for New Music Tallinn has a very special agreement in order to use this instrument and perform brand new pieces written for ensemble and harmonium.

Ostrava Days is a biennial and it takes place every other year. It focuses on contemporary classical music, whether it be avant-garde, experimental, or otherwise challenging musical efforts. The Festival is preceded by the Institute, which gives young composers the possibility to work with world-famous figures of contemporary music for three weeks and be present at rehearsals of their own pieces. The Ostrava Days Festival presents many orchestral compositions to the public in world or Czech premieres. Woks are studied during the last two weeks in August by Ostravská banda, Ostrava New Orchestra, and the Canticum Ostrava choir, along with many top-class ensembles, soloists, and conductors.
