Evelin Seppar (b. 1986). Lighthouse (2014, Estonian premiere)

The seed for the current collaboration between Macadam Ensemble and Evelin Seppar was planted during the Tallinn Music Week in 2014. Seppar’s Lighthouse will be performed by this French ensemble and is inspired by E.E. Cummings’s poetry as well as Canadian lighthouse keeper Patrick James Dillon’s diary from the 1880s. As Evelin Seppar explains: “I chose the lighthouse theme because I love the ocean. Tallinn and Nantes are both coastal cities, so the ocean also that way seemed to connect me and Macadam Ensemble. I was inspired by the loneliness and isolation that comes with the lighthouse keeper’s life and in my work I focused on one year in Patrick James Dillon’s life. Since nature and changing seasons play an important role in Dillon’s life, it seemed fitting to accompany his laconic diary entries with nature poems by E.E. Cummings.”

Based in Nantes, France, Macadam Ensemble is a vocal and instrumental ensemble founded in 2012. The enseble’s repertoire includes early, classical, and contemporary music. Macadam Ensemble often participates in various theatre, film, and electronic music projects. Etienne Ferchaud is the ensemble’s conductor and artistic director.
