PROGRAMME

Rudolf Tobias (1873–1918). String Quartet No 2 in C Minor (1902)
Arvo Pärt (b. 1935). “Fratres”, version for string quartet (1977/1989)
Arvo Pärt. “Summa”, version for string quartet (1977/1991)
Jüri Reinvere (b. 1971). Quartet No 3 from “Four Quartets” for string quartet and spoken word (2016, premiere)

Three well-known Estonian composers Rudolf Tobias, Arvo Pärt, and Jüri Reinvere all have, at different points of their careers, lived and worked in Berlin. Regardless of the reason for choosing Berlin as their new home, all three composers were inspired and influenced by this city’s creative atmosphere. Although Tobias, Pärt, and Reinvere belong to different generations and compositional schools, their years in Berlin form a kind of a century-long musical arch from the early 20th century into the early 21th. The works by these three composers provide us with a sense of continuum of Estonian music in one of the world’s metropolises. (Harry Liivrand, Estonian cultural attaché in Germany)
