The versatile musician Arved Haug was known as a composer, singer, instrumentalist and band leader.

Arved Haug studied organ with Augusti Topman (1937–1939) as a free auditor at the Tallinn Conservatory, and clarinet with Juhan Kaljaspoolik and singing with Jenny Siimon at the Tallinn Music School (1947–1952). In 1963, he graduated from the seminary for young composers of the Estonian SSR Composers Union, tutored by Edgar Arro and Boris Kõrver.

Haug was the band leader of the Estonian rifle corps during World War II. From 1945 he played saxophone, double bass and percussion in several orchestras. From 1952 to 1961 he sang in the mixed choir of the Estonian Radio and from 1960 to 1964 in the male quartet of the Estonian Radio (with Eri Klas, Uno Loop and Kalju Terasmaa). Arved Haug worked in the Estonian SSR State Philharmonic (1961–1986), conducted there the Laine ensemble (1962–1966), the Vana Toomas orchestra (1971–1977) and the Erfia ensemble (1980–1984) and was the music director of variety productions (1966–1971). 1990-1995 he played saxophone in In Swing Band.

Arved Haug has written nearly 450 songs mainly to texts by Otto Roots, Aino Otto, Kalju Kass, Heldur Karmo and Ülo Halling. Themes of sea, land and love were particularly close to the composer's heart. Many songs have won prizes in competitions: "Hurray, the Wedding", "Blacksmith's Tale", "Three Carnations", "Tiina's Birthday", "Beach Girl" (Estonian State Philharmonic competition), "Sea Music", "The Years Have Passed" (Arne Oit Song Contest), "Beach Boy", "Song of the Fields", "The Ship Leaves in the Morning", "Beach Stone and Wave", "For Fisherman's Wife" (song contest "Men, sea and land"), "Only Watercress Blooms in My City Yard" (song contest "Viljaveski"). In 1985, "The Lullaby of Peace" received the Estonian Music Annual Award.

His songs have been performed by Anne Veski, Ivo Linna, Vello Orumets, Jaak Joala, ensemble Laine, etc.

In addition to numerous songbooks, Arved Haug's songs have been published in three author collections (Eesti Raamat 1969, 1982 and 1987). In 1996, his album "I send my shadow" (Forte) was released.

Arved Haug is a Merited Artist of the Estonian SSR (1985).
