International new music festival NYYD 2011 in Tallinn

International new music festival NYYD '11 is held on 20-28 October in Tallinn, the subtitle of the festival is ‘Future Symphonies’.
This year's
festival hosts two guest composers - Scottish conductor and composer James MacMillan, and Austrian composer, conductor, chansonnier and leader of the third Viennese school - Heinz Karl Gruber.
On Friday, October 21, both of the guest composers will give also lectures at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Traditionally, the NYYD Festival focuses on new works commissioned by Estonian composers, the authors of this years festival’s are Tõnu Kõrvits, Helena Tulve, Tatiana Kozlova and Miriam Tally.
On the opening concert of the festival, on October 20 at 19 in Estonia concert hall, a new work of Tõnu Kõrvits Hymns to Northern Lights will be premiered by Britten Sinfonia under conducting of James MacMillan, the concert program also includes two of his works - Oboe Concerto and Tryst.
Helena Tulve’s Anastatica will be premiered on Saturday, October 22 at 19 in Estonia concert hall by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra with conductor Olar Elts. The concert will also feature works by Unsuk Chin, Charles Ives and David Del Tredici.
On Wednesday, October 26 at 19, a new work by Tatiana Kozlova will be premiered at the Russian Cultural Centre in Tallinn by Belgian ensemble Ictus, conducted by Georges-Elie Octors. Also multimedia performance Telegrams from the Nose by William Kentridge and François Sarhan will be played
Mirjam Tally's new piece Signals will have its premiere in Estonia concert hall on Thursday, October 27 at 19, performers are Nyyd Ensemble, String Quartet Nyyd and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, conductor is Risto Joost, soloists pipa player Lan Weiwei (China) and cellist Leho Karin. Also works by Heinz Karl Gruber and Tan Dun will be performed.

In this year, the NYYD Festival celebrates its 20th year of activity. During this time, the festival has presented the most exciting and innovative musical compositions from Estonia and other countries, brought to Tallinn today's most important composers, soloists and orchestras, and has commissioned and premiered nearly 180 new works by Estonian composers. Festival’s artistic directors are Erkki-Sven Tüür and Madis Kolk.
NYYD Festival 2011 partners and supporters are European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011, Estonian Ministry of Culture, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Estonian National Broadcasting, the British Council, Réseau Varèse, the U.S. Embassy and Austrian Embassy.
