Program: Cantatas and concerts by Georg Philipp Telemann
In 1722, Bach, Graupner and Telemann competed for the position of music director of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The competition works of these great men were performed at the final concert at the 2022 festival Tallinn feat. Reval”. Concerts dedicated to both Bach and Graupner have already been played at our previous festivals, and that’s why this year’s choice, Telemann, is quite expected. This is the composer whose music was most appreciated by his contemporaries. However, time has not been kind, because as a Guinness record holder as the composer who composed the most, the musicologists of the following eras labeled Telemann a graphomaniac – such a lot of music simply cannot be all good. Yet, it is. Telemann doesn’t seem to have any weak composition. If sometimes it seems like that, then it is probably a rather modest interpretation. In the Baroque era, it was quite common for composers to use the same musical material in different compositions. In Telemann’s works, you will not find such reuse. The students are happy, because when they were asked to name a composer who wrote in some genre, Telemann was always suitable. True, chamber music players have discovered Telemann long ago, but how many of us can whistle a tune from his almost 50 Christmas cantatas?
No matter how hard we try, we cannot get an idea of the sea by looking at a drop of water. Today’s “drops” are selected from Telemann’s large number of cantatas, interspersed with instrumental concertos.
