Henn Rebane

One of Estonian most outstanding accordion players and pedagogue Henn Rebane began his accordion studies at Jõhvi Children’s Music School (with Boriss Russetski) and continued with Venda Tamman at Tallinn Music School from which he graduated  in 1972. In 1977, he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in choral conducting and music education, specialised in accordion, under the supervision of Leopold Vigla and Igor Nikitin. He has improved his skills in summer seminar of Taholampi accordion festival in Finland with Fridrich Lips, Lars Holm and Matti Rantanen.

Currently, he is working as a free-lance musician and lector. Henn Rebane has teached accordion at Viimsi Music School (1977–1990 and since 1994), Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory in Kokkola in Finland (1990–1994), Viljandi Culture Academy (1995–1997) and Georg Ots Tallinn Music School (1996–1997). He has been host and editor in Kuku Radio (1994–1997), Vikerraadio (1997–2005) and classical music radio Klassikaraadio.

Henn Rebane was an initiator and one of the organisers of Estonian first international accordion festivals („Rägavere ’87”, „Rägavere ’89”,  „Pärnu ’91”), he is the founder of the Estonian Acordion Society (1995) and has been its president (1995–1997). Rebane has participated in the work of international juries (1989 Bulgaria, 2006 Finland), compiled and published pedagogical materials for accordion („My Accordion”, „Polyphnoy Album for Accordionists”), accordion books and articles.

Henn Rebane has been an active musician both as a soloist and chamber musician. He has given recitals in many European countries, Asia, USA and Australia and has participated in many festivals (e.g. Denmark, Lithuania, Finland). He has collaborated with singers Teo Maiste, Mati Palm, Urve Tauts, Jaan Arder, Voldemar Kuslap, Ivo Linna, Tõnis Mägi, Lauri Pihlap, Silvi Vrait, Jaak Jürisson and others and ensembles Karavan, Apelsin, Vennaskond, New Folk Ensemble and Akrodion Super Trio. Rebane has performed as a soloist with Estonian Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian Radio Light Music Orchestra and others. In 2003–2005, Rebane participated as a soloist in performances of Luis Bacalov’s large-scale work „Misa Tango“. He has recorded accordion music in Estonian Radio and recorded 10 CD-s and 2 LP-s.

Henn Rebane has composed incidental music for documentaries and play, songs and four accordion compilation books with CDs: “5 Estonian Dances”, „Childrens Album for Accordion”, „Dances with Accordion“ and „Accordion Album“.

In 2001, Henn Rebane was awarded the Medal of the Order of the White Star.
