  Erosion is the action of surface processes (such as the water flow or wind) that removes soil, rock, or dissolved materials from one location on the Earth’s crust and transports it to another location.
  In this work, I have been inspired by erosion on both abstract and practical level. First, I am inspired by erosion as a process in a more abstract global meaning, caused by human activities and global warming. While erosion is a natural process, human activities have increased the rate at which erosion is occuring globally by 10–40 times. Water and wind erosion are the two primary causes of land degradation; they are responsible for about 84% of the global extent of degraded land combined, making excessive erosion one of the most significant environmental problems world-wide.
  Then, erosion as a more practical inspiration source: there are landscapes, which I have visited where erosion is a significant element. For instance, an abandoned Soviet-era prison and forced-labor open mine located in Rummu, Estonia where the underground waters have flooded the quarry. A magnificent „blue lagoon“ is surrounding this surrealistic landscape.
  Similar places can be found on Gotland island, Sweden where I live: abandoned bunkers from the Cold War era, abandoned factories (Furillen) and blue lagoon in North of Gotland, a former open mine.
  I have kept these visual elements in my mind while composing this work and some musical elements may directly refer to erosion as a process: „falling“ musical patterns, slow glissandos/varying tempos of glissandos, certain electroacoustic sounds, playing with extreme bow pressure (cello solo), for instance. Some musical sections refer to industrial sources as been recognizable also in my earlier works. Here, for instrance, tutti sections with polyrhythmic structure.

  Lament was written as a comment or introduction to Beethoven’s 9:th symphony. The Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra commissioned works from a number of composers, with the task of linking in some way to one of Beethoven’s nine symphonies – which composer got which symphony was decided by lottery. Tally chose to emphasise the lyrical side of Beethoven by basing her work on a recitative in the cello part, taken from the fourth movement of the Ninth Symphony.
  
  Lament (2013) is one of 9 works written within the project “Beethoven & Beyond” where 9 composers participated and each received a Beethoven symphony by lottery. This work is based on Beethoven’s 9th symphony. A recitative in the cello part, with which the 4th movement begins, became the basic material for the whole piece. I have brought out the lyrical side of Beethoven, which is perhaps not a typical feature of his style, because I thought that “fight” and fireworks, which often describe his music (and also the 9th) are a bit too redundant in this context. I have repeated excerpts of the cello recitative in different registers, so that it becomes like a mantra. It is densified with overtones and cluster lines, like an acclamation. This mantra is repeatedly interrupted by fanfares, which fall like a shadow over the lyricism.

  This composition focuses on density of matter and intensity of musical colors. Strings are compressed to tight clusters, lines will slowly develop towards more intensive colors. “In general, density can be changed by changing either the pressure or the temperature. Increasing the pressure will always increase the density of a material.” (Wikipedia) In musical matters, dynamics fill the function of increasing or decreasing the pressure. Shifting crescendo’s and diminuendo’s of musical texture can be compared to waves in an ocean. The musical texture shifts between more or less intensive color spectrum.

  The idea that has its outlet in my new orchestral work Turbulence (2006) spun in my mind for a good many years, only now taking shape in a slightly different form than originally conceived. The basic idea of the song occurred to me once when I was on a ferry and listening to the sound of the ship’s engine and other noises. Over time, other snatches of ideas accumulated. Something about flying… Timbres associated with the workings of machinery… Here there is some experimentation with percussion instrument techniques, pointillist textures… In a word, the final execution is assembled from many ideas that occurred to me over time and which I could have used perhaps to write a number of different pieces.

  “Fade to Blue” is exploring the length and weight of waves. An ocean or a sea as a pattern of waves. The waves will reach their hight in different speed and strength. There is not two similar waves in a sea - all waves have different form and a movement pattern. From a distance waves look similar but if one looks closer one will see details which will distinguish each one.
  A static moment from past, like a impressionistic painting which has been painted by the sea in sunset. A ship gives a signal before it will vanish into mist.

I think this title describes the character and technique of this work well: contrasts between the „cold“, airy colors in high register and the rustle, rhythmic „rocky“ sections, sometimes performed with extra pressure; and gliding between these two contrasting worlds. Like a melting iceberg, unstable on the ground, rapidly vanishing.

  As often is the case, this time the title of the work is slightly an expression of the compositional idea. Harlequin is related to terpsichorean, playful dancing rhythms and circus tricks. This piece, too, has rhythmic vivacity. As for tricks, there are fewer of those.

  The avenue is an entrance to the primeval forest. Neat rows of trees (=rhythmic sections in my work) are interrupted by melody lines that represent echoes of the past when the trees were allowed to grow wild without human intervention. The dreamy melodies represent the world that has been lost. Through an avenue, you gradually get closer to the dream forest, which you can create as you wish, as the wild forest is no longer there.
  
  The dream forest is something that only exists in the artificial world, in a computer game where you create the forest yourself from different fantasy plants and trees. You might put together your own forest of trees that have existed in the past, in geographically dispersed areas. For example, in the customised dream forest you might have a tree from the Mesozoic period growing next to European conifers.
  
  Talking about the compositional process, I thought that the different instruments are characters (=different trees) in the forest, and I use some different kinds of noise and air sounds, and there are melodies, as a relic of the past times.

  The title refers to te island of Gotland (Sweden) and a Gotlandic folk tune appears just at the end of the second part. During the time I composed this work, I was also thinking of Antonio Vivaldi’s music, especially his Four Seasons. The second part of this piece probably shows the inspiration from Vivaldi the most, especially the character and textures.

  The title of this work Warm Life at the Foot of the Iceberg comes from Estonian poet, Kristiina Ehin, whose poetry has inspired me several times before. I think this title describes the character and technique of this work well: contrasts between the „cold“, airy colors in high register and the rustle, rhythmic „rocky“ sections, sometimes performed with extra pressure; and gliding between these two contrasting worlds. Like a melting iceberg, unstable on the ground, rapidly vanishing.

  I have written several works, in which I use Kristiina Ehin’s poetry. Ehin’s poems have also inspired some of the titles of my works. I often use English translations by Ilmar Lehtpere. One of the reasons is obviously his deep understanding of the English language but another important reason is the fact that the English language is rich in consonants and using a combination of different consonants or parts of words have always been an important element for me while working with a choir.
  Kristiina Ehin often finds her inspiration in nature and so do I as a composer. That’s another reason why I’m often using texts by poets with similar sources of inspiration. Wide open landscapes, sounds of the sea, shorelines, loneliness in the nature...
  My idea in that composition is to create a “surround sound” experience of all these sounds of nature, that’s why the choir members are required to be placed around the audience and are sometimes recommended to move around. Using native instruments such as bullroarers and also plastic whirly tubes should also increase the imaginary experience of being in an open landscape in the middle of nowhere.

  Mysterious lake. Silence and emptiness. A lonely kayak passing in the dark near the dock. The faint noise of the boat engine. The mysterious pull of darkness and the silvery glow of moonlight. The ghostly whispers of the wind, the long shadows of the trees, heavy silence. The world begins and ends in darkness, like a closed circle.
  
  My composition is a meditation on the effect of darkness on the mind. Heavy thoughts will creep forward in the presence of night, faint whispers and faded memories will haunt in distorted reality. One might get a glimpse of the Moon´s dark side, which is always in the shadow, and which one will never see from Earth. Of the lakes that have dried up and are always on the shadow side, pierced by craters.

  Apparitions has nearly a religious title for several reasons. The music conveys the spiritual world in the form of soundscapes with ghostly moods. Prolonged dark sounds are lightened by choir-like flashes of light and overtones. Pop-like rhythms are mixed with hissing, whispers and multitones, Rubber balls run along strings, the double bass screaming loudly and the bassoon hissing like a teapot with boiling water. Blowing sounds roll in like the waves on the beach and the voices inhale like asthmatics do. In my work I use a whole palette of different advanced playing techniques on several instruments combined with voices and electronic material. For several years I have been collecting sounds, mostly in Sweden and Iceland. Recorded sounds of harpsichord (Guðrún Óskarsdóttir), double bass (Jonas Nilsson), voice (Matilda Andersson and Mirjam Tally) and bassoon (Anders Matell).

  Interference is the ability of two waves passing through each other to mingle, reinforcing each other where crests coincide and canceling each other out where crests and troughs coincide, similar to the way ripples in water interfere with each other. This results, for example, in an interference pattern of light and dark stripes on a screen illuminated by light from two sources.
  
  This process describes well the musical structure of my work - contrasting elements interrupting each other, also transforming from one element to another, or interleaving. The electroacoustic material is based on recordings of extended techniques of Paezold bass recorder, recorded with Anna Petrini at EMS electroacoustic music studio in Stockholm, Sweden. Other recorded sounds: Jorge Variego (bass clarinet), Matilda Andersson and David Åhlén (vocals), Girilal Baars (vocals and didgeridoo) and Omnisphere synthesizer.

• The Voyager

  The Voyager (2016) is an electroacoustic composition that has several parts. These electronic music vignettes were first composed for the Estonian Harpsichord Festival in order to provide a smooth transition between works. I use environmental recordings that I have made at the nature reserve of the Stora Karlsö island as well as in Arild, a small fishing village in the Skåne, Sweden. There I recorded the harbour soundscape during a storm. All of these environmental sounds are combined with the synthesizer’s sounds and the keywords could be drone and glitch.

  I have written several works, in which I use Kristiina Ehin’s poetry. Ehin’s poems have also inspired some of the titles of my works. I often use English translations by Ilmar Lehtpere. One of the reasons is obviously his deep understanding of the English language but another important reason is the fact that the English language is rich in consonants and using a combination of different consonants or parts of words have always been an important element for me while working with a choir.
  Kristiina Ehin often finds her inspiration in nature and so do I as a composer. That’s another reason why I’m often using texts by poets with similar sources of inspiration. Wide open landscapes, sounds of the sea, shorelines, loneliness in the nature...
  My idea in that composition is to create a “surround sound” experience of all these sounds of nature, that’s why the choir members are required to be placed around the audience and are sometimes recommended to move around. Using native instruments such as bullroarers and also plastic whirly tubes should also increase the imaginary experience of being in an open landscape in the middle of nowhere.

  “Blow” was written in 2005 when I was a resident at the Visby international composers’ centre on a grant from NOMUS. The premiere performance of the piece was in the framework of the Icelandic festival “Dark Music Days”. The source material used is without exception natural sounds – air blown across the mouths of bottles, the pitter-patter of the rain, the pizzicato of wine glasses…
