  Evelin Seppar: “The clarinet concerto Kraft was commissioned by Estonian Music Days and consists of four movements. The work takes its title and inspiration from Bach’s motet Komm, Jesu, komm. I’ve sung all of Bach’s motets myself, but it was a fragment of one motet that I heard in the spring of 2022 – Die Kraft verschwindt je mehr und mehr – which particularly struck me. I knew immediately that the title of my forthcoming clarinet concerto would be Kraft. Kraft means “power” or “force” in German. I’ve been thinking a lot about what these words could mean to me and what role they could play in an instrumental concert. The clarinet concerto was completed in the beginning of 2023. The influence of Bach can also be heard in the second and especially the third movement. Kraft was written for Soo-Young Lee, the concertmaster of the ENSO’s clarinet section, whose playing has greatly inspired me and who has been a great help in refining the musical material.”

  Evelin Seppar: I chose the topic of Lighthouse because of my love for the sea and because both Tallinn and Nantes are close to it. I was also curious about the solitude and seclusion that are a ajor part of a lighthouse keeper's life. So I decided to make a piece about a lighthouse keeper's life during one year. Since nature and the cycle of seasons is the most important part in such a life then it felt natural to add related poems by Cummings; but also to add a poetic side next to the short and laconicdiary entries.

  I stumbled into the text of “Поля ли мои, поля” (“Fields, My Fields”) completely by accident while working on something else. But I became increasingly interested in this accidental discovery. I compiled a bridal lament out of several Russian traditional songs. Although it is a moving subject, it is not the most important to me: I was fascinated by the text’s intense drama and that it was almost like a monodrama as well as its poetics and descriptions of nature. The piece has three sections that are repeated and blend into each other: the farewell to the childhood home’s nature, the braiding of two braids (single women only had one braid) and the begging of the father that he wouldn’t force his daughter to be married to a stranger.
