Tartu City Day 2016 – Opera Crosses Over

On June 29, opera soloists will leave their department in the oldest of Estonian theatres,
that of Vanemuine Theatre, and join their forces with other artists for concerts in somewhat less expected places.

One`s favourite musicians and bands will meet up with opera soloists resulting in the most exciting and enjoyable crossovers. Other hints to that extraordinary art form can be found, seen, heard and even tasted, perhaps, in Tartu that day.

In the evening, the last great concert of Tartu City Day will take place on Town Hall Square where soloists, symphony orchestra, summertime Tartu and the much-loved arias – the real treats – will all team up for the final opera symbiosis of the day.

Since 2003 Tartu has celebrated its City Day on the 29th June, which in the traditional folk calendar is called the Day of Peter (and Paul), in reference to the Christian apostles who are deemed protectors of the city. In the year 67 AD apostles Peter and Paul became martyrs to their faith. In the Middle Ages they were the patron saints of Tartu and their key and sword are depicted on the city’s coat of arms.
In a fashion similar to many other European cities, Tartu provides a cultural and entertainment programme on City Day. This year there will be concerts again, as well as all sorts of fun and educational activities.
