Maria Kõrvits

Maria Kõrvits began her composition studies at the Tallinn Music High School under Alo Põlmäe. From 2006–2012 she studied composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Helena Tulve and Tõnu Kõrvits. From 2007–2008 she studied with Fabio Nieder in Trieste, Italy, as an exchange student. She has taken part in several masterclasses with Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Ole Lützow-Holm, Adriana Hölzky, Louis Andriessen, Rafael Reina and many others. She has also taken part in a mastercourse with Ensemble Modern and Péter Eötvös in 2011.

Kõrvits has written mainly ensemble works and choral music. Also she has created music for film, dance performance, exhibitions and installation – cooperation in this field bends her to the Estonian Academy of Arts as well as various independent artists and choreographers.

Her works have been performed at the Estonian Music Days Festival, the Autumn Festival of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre as well as in Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Canada. Her music have been peformed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Chamber Choir Sireen, Mixed Choir HUIK!, SaxEst and others. Orchestral work "Langedes ülespoole, taeva kaarjasse kaussi" ("falling up into the bowl of sky") achieved the first prize in the category of composers under 30 at the 63rd International Rostrum of Composers held in Wroclaw in 2016. For her successful creative activity, Maria Kõrvits was given the Award of the Endowment for Music of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia in 2016.
