PALACE MUSIC SUMMER CONCERT

DAVID SHEMER – harpsichord (Israel)

Program:
Johann Sebastian Bach
Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829
Partita No. 2 in c minor, BWV 826
Partita No. 4 in D major, BWV 828

David Shemer has long been one of the leading figures on the early music scene in Israel. He taught harpsichord and early music at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and is often invited to hold master classes in Israel, Europe and the USA. In 1989 he established the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra - www.jbo. co.il - the first Israeli ensemble to perform Baroque music on period instruments and using Baroque techniques. Shemer has been the JBO's artistic director and conductor ever since. Under his direction, the JBO has long since established itself as one of the leading collectives on the Israeli music scene, with a highly successful subscription series in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa, as well as frequent performances at important festivals in Israel and abroad - most recently, in Montreal, Canada. David Shemer serves as the artistic director of two annual international festivals that take place in Israel under the auspices of JBO: the Bach Festival, taking place in March, and "Witches?" - a summer celebration of women and femininity in Baroque music. As a soloist, chamber musician and conductor, David Shemer appears and records in Europe and the USA. His latest recording of J.S. Bach's "Goldberg Variations" has received enthusiastic reviews from critics and audiences alike. Together with esteemed Baroque violinist Walter Reiter, he recently recorded all the Bach sonatas for violin and harpsichord at the Bachhaus in Eisenach. This recording is to be released shortly.

Tickets are on sale at the Kadriorg Art Museum and Piletilevi outlets. The concert tickets are also valid for museum visits on the day of the concert.

Kadriorg Palace is one the most well known and beautiful historic concert halls in Estonia offering memorable music experiences already for many decades. The tradition of performing music in the baroque palace goes back to 18th century when court music accompanied the daily life. The palace has had the pleasure to welcome many international artists and ensembles for outstanding performances.
The construction of the Kadriorg Palace was started by the Tsar Peter the Great of Russia in 1718. It was named Catharinenthal (in Estonian Kadriorg) in honour of his wife Catherine I. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Nicola Michetti and its abundantly decorated main hall is one of the most exquisite examples of baroque architecture both in Estonia and in northern Europe.
Kadriorg Palace has always been the crown jewel of Tallinn. The small festive tsars’ palace in the style of Roman Baroque, surrounded by a regular garden, with fountains, hedges and flowerbeds, planned after the model of Versailles.
The palace was a summer residence of Russian emperors untill 1917. In the 1920s, and again in 1946-1991 palace served as the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. In the 1930s, it was the residence of the Head of State of the Estonian Republic. In 2000, it was opened as the Kadriorg Art Museum, which displays the largest collection of old Russian and Western European art in Estonia.

The artistic director of the Palace Music Concert Series is Aare Tammesalu.
