"King Roger" is the magnum opus by Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) the most important Polish composer to emerge after Chopin. It is anything but a conventional opera: part music drama, part "mystery play", exploring the conflict between reason and instinct, duty versus hedonism.
The plot takes place during one night when the restless crowd demands that the King should punish the young Shepherd, who has come from the mountains and incites the people. King Roger allows him to leave, but requires the Shepherd to return for a judgment…
